Trial Excavation in Haerba-ling

On-site investigation in Haerba-ling was carried out from fiscal year 2008 to 2009 to study exact burial conditions of chemical weapons and soil conditions to determine methods for excavation and recovery as well as to validate these methods and safety measures.

Locations of ACW excavation and recovery sitesTo date, a total of 39 excavation and recovery operations has been carried out which resulted in the excavation and recovery of approximately 50,000 ACWs in China.

1st: In Sep.2000 Excavated and recovered 897 items, mainly Ki-Dan (chemical shell), in Beian City, Heilongjiang Province
2nd: In Dec.2001 Excavated and recovered 9,419 items, mainly Aka-Toh and Midori-Toh (gas pot), in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. 17,612 items had been excavated and recovered in the previous year in an on-site investigation (carried out jointly with the Prime Minister's Office) by the Foreign Ministry.
3rd: In Sep. 2002 Excavated and recovered 377 items, mainly Aka-Dan and Ki-Dan, in Sunwu, Heilongjinag Province.
4th: In Sep. 2003 Excavated and recovered 47 items, mainly Ki-Dan in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province.

10th: In Nov. 2005 Excavated 374 items suspected of being Japanese ACWs in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province (1st phase).
11th: In Jun. 2006 Excavated and recovered 231 items suspected of being Japanese ACWs in Lianhuapao, Dunhus city, Jilin Province (2nd phase).
12th: In Jul.2006 Excavated and recovered 210 items, mainly Aka-Dan and Ki-Dan, in Nangan city, Heilongjiang Province.
13th: In Aug.2006 Recovered 697 items, mainly Aka-Dan and Ki-Dan, that had been discovered in Wangkui, Suihua City, Heilongjiang Province and transferred to Haerbin City, Heilongjiang Province.
14th: In Sep.2006 Excavated and recovered 418 items suspected of being Japanese ACWs in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province (3rd phase).

25th: In Nov. 2010 75 items possibly Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
26th: In Mar. 2011, 29 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Qunxing Village, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.
27th: In May 2011, 8 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Qunxing Village, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.
28th: In July 2011, 29 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
29th: In August 2011, 37 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
30th: In September 2011, 59 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
31st: In November 2011, 105 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
32nd: In September 2011, 76 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province.
33rd: In October 2011, 49 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province.
34th: In April 2012, 33 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Mingxing Village, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guandong Province.
35th: In June 2012, 314 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
36th: In July 2012, 357 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
37th In August 2012, 205 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.
38th In September 2012, 171 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Hunchun City, Jilin Province.
39th In November 2012, 93 items possible Japanese ACWs were excavated and recovered in Lianhuapao, Dunhua City, Jilin Province.

As of December 2012, including those recovered as a result of on-site investigations by the Foreign Ministry, a total of approximately 50,000 ACWs has been excavated and recovered.

Mobile Destruction

During the April 2007 Japan-China Prime Ministerial meeting, the Japanese side expressed their intention to introduce mobile destruction facilities to speed up destruction process.
Technology for destruction is under consideration in Japan. The Chinese side is doing internal coordination to receive the deployment. Both sides are working to realize an early introduction of the facilities.
