27th: Urgent excavation and recovery operation in Qunxing Village, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province (May, 2011)

Outline:
In response to the accident resulting in injury which occurred in June 2005 in Panyu District, Guangzhou City, the Foreign Ministry carried out an investigation operation in the same month. After that, based upon the request from the Chinese Government, an urgent excavation and recovery operation was carried out which resulted in the excavation and recovery of 13 ACWs.
In May 2006 the existence of more shells was confirmed and excavation and recovery operations were conducted by the Cabinet Office in March which resulted in the excavation and recovery of 7 ACWs.
In March 2011, the excavation and recovery operations were carried out in Panyu District, Guangzhou City upon completion of preparatory works such as a probe operation, building of a water-blocking wall, transference of residents at sea and drainage water.
After the completion of the excavation and recovery operations in March 2011, in neighboring areas of the district, shells, etc. which appeared to be ACWs were found. For this reason, from April 2011, an urgent excavation and recovery operation in Qunxing Village, Panyu District was conducted.
